Tweeting on her handle today, Minister Kirsty Coventry posted, “Good news. It has been agreed that ownership and operations of the National Sports Stadium in Zimbabwe will be transferred to Ministry of Youth, Sport, Art and Recreation. We have the experience and passion to use this opportunity for Zimbabwe to become a sporting powerhouse,” tweeted the Minister.
The National Sports Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium situated in Harare, with a maximum capacity of 80 000 people. It is the largest stadium in Zimbabwe and was built in 1987.
Previously the stadium was under the stewardship of the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing.
Citizens have hailed this development saying that this move is good since all the sporting activities are done by the Ministry of Sports which is well versed with the upkeep and maintenance of the stadium.
The citizens proposed for all the stadia to be run by the Ministry of Sports.
This move is part of efforts by the Government to address the failure by the MDC led Harare city council to maintain the stadia resulting in the decision by Confederation of African Football (CAF) to ban the country`s stadia from hosting international matches. The continental football administration argues that the stadia in Zimbabwe are in a sorry state.
