The Quarterly Labour Force Survey-Household which kick-started today, will assist Government to implement policies in relation to the total output achieved during the exercise.
In a statement today, the Public Relations and Communication Officer of Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT), Richard Chiringa announced that the QLFS will provide high frequency labour market statistics to inform policy formulation, decision making, human capital development strategies and compilation of Quarterly Gross Domestic Product (GDP), among other key uses.
“The survey also provides key labour market indicators which include but are not limited to employment levels, both formal and informal, unemployment, labour underutilization, income levels, labour migration and job losses,” he said.
Meanwhile, the youths are hopeful that this survey will go a long way in designing employment policies which will ensure that a large chunk of skilled yet unemployed youths are absorbed into the workforce to reduce the unemployment rate that currently exists, as well as promote economic growth.
“I am just very hopeful that this survey will ensure Government is well aware of the number of skilled yet unemployed youths out here. This will guarantee that they formulate policies to cater for us. As investors flock into the country we are sure to be included as part of the workforce, instead of investors bringing in their own workers from foreign countries,” said Gabriel Matongo who just completed his studies from the University of Zimbabwe.
Furthermore, Chiringa advised that the exercise would facilitate a selection of households to be covered in the Quarterly Labour Force Survey and that the listing exercise would be conducted in all the ten provinces, information collected therein will be strictly confidential and would be used for statistical purposes only.
The QLFS is being conducted under the Census and Statistics Act [Chapter 10:29] of 2007.
