The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC) has addressed and dismissed misleading reports circulating on social media alleging that it had dispatched 67 officials to accompany just 7 athletes to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
In a statement released yesterday, ZOC President Thabani Gonye clarified the actual composition of the delegation.
"ZOC officially announced more than a week ago members of Team Zimbabwe made up of 7 athletes and 8 officials headed by Mr Mapondera as Chef de Mission representing the nation at the Paris 2024," Gonye stated.
He further explained the presence of other Zimbabweans in Paris.
"We are aware that there are many other technical officials, dignitaries invited to the games directly to officiate and as guests and many other hundreds of Zimbabweans in Paris in various capacities some to support our team at the Games who as ZOC can't account and comment on. These are not part of Team Zimbabwe delegation but all Zimbabweans are welcome to cheer and support our athletes. As stated, we announced and alluded to 7 athletes, 8 officials, and the CDM assigned as Chief of Mission,” added Gonye.
Amidst this clarification, sports personality Yvonne Mangunda took to social media to criticize those spreading unverified information.
"Dear world, stop the false information," Mangunda urged, highlighting the negative impact of such rumours on the nation’s image and the morale of the athletes representing Zimbabwe at the global event.
Meanwhile, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga is also in Paris, not as part of the Olympic delegation but on a broader diplomatic mission.
His visit includes a series of business meetings aimed at advancing Zimbabwe’s international engagement and re-engagement efforts.
