Self-exiled former Cabinet Minister, Saviour Kasukuwere is reportedly undecided over his political future as he is still hobnobbing with several political formations ahead of the 2023 harmonized elections.
A source, who spoke to this publication on condition of anonymity, said that the leader of the newly formed Democratic Union of Zimbabwe (DUZ) party, Robert Chapman revealed last week that Kasukuwere, who is holed up in South Africa, was begging to join the new party.
According to the source, Chapman told delegates during the launch of DUZ on 11 December 2022 at Maruva Guest Lodge in Bulawayo that he was still considering whether or not to accommodate Kasukuwere within DUZ structures considering his tainted past.
“At the meeting, Chapman revealed that Kasukuwere was desperate to join DUZ. However, Chapman said he was hesitant to accommodate Kasukuwere as he views him as an over ambitious politician who is power hungry and might cause divisions within DUZ”, said the source.
The source added that Chapman said that he was more comfortable working with former Alliance for People's Agenda (APA) leader, Nkosana Moyo than Kasukuwere as the former was more mature and composed.
However, political analyst Terrence Chipwanya accused Kasukuwere of being a political flip flopper as he has dined and wined with several political formations since his fall from glory in 2017.
“We can’t blame Chapman for being hesitant to accommodate Kasukuwere within DUZ structures as he is a power hungry politician. If Chapman accommodates Kasukuwere, then he would have risked his political career as Kasukuwere would surely engineer a coup to dethrone him so that he becomes the DUZ leader. Again, who can trust a person like Kasukuwere who has dined with almost five political formations since 2017,”said Chipwanya.
Chipwanya further said that if Kasukuwere continued to exhibit political confusion, he risked losing the little credibility that he still held. He added that a political flip flopper could not attract the attention of the Zimbabwe’s electorate.
Since his expulsion from ZANU PF in 2017, Kasukuwere has been linked with several political formations including National Patriotic Front (NPF), Tyson wa Bantu Movement, MDC-Alliance, Third Way and now DUZ.
