Factional bickering within the structureless Triple C continues to cascade to the grassroots with Mutasa North Constituency being the latest to catch the fast spreading fire.
A war has erupted in the Constituency over the Parliamentary candidature for the 2023 harmonised general elections. An insider revealed that there were three candidates vying to represent the party in the forthcoming race.
“There is the interim Mutasa North Constituency Chairperson, Bossi Gwarimbo, our UK based member Bornwell Chitamba and Godfrey Chitsara. All the three have expressed interest to contest the seat. The jostling for the seat has divided the party,” said the source.
The source said that party’s interim National Deputy Secretary General, David Chimhini, who was also the appointed Mutasa District Nhimbe-Mugwazo programme coordinator, had been accused of interfering with candidate selection.
“Chimhini is supporting the candidature of Chitsara and he has been browbeating people to support his choice. Chsitsara is not popular in this constituency but Chimhini comes here telling people that president (Nelson) Chamisa has endorsed him. We prescribe democracy to other parties but we don’t practise same,” lamented the source.
He added that Manicaland provincial chairperson, Prosper Mutseyami was supporting Gwarimbo and was working hard to make sure that his horse prevails.
“On the other hand, there is chairman Mutseyami who is supporting Gwarimbo. Mutseyami has rancorous relations with Chimhini and he is actually working relentlessly to oust Chimhini as the district coordinator.
“Gwarimbo will travel to Chipinge on 13 August for a victory celebration where they intent to brief the president (Chamisa) on all the divisive machinations being done by Chimhini in Mutasa. He will travel with a few other people from the constituency who were coached on what to say to the president. Mutseyami will fund their travel expenses,” revealed the source.
Triple C has been dogged by conflict from its inception. The party leader no longer trusts his lieutenants especially his co-vice leader, Tendai Biti whom he views as ambitious and a threat to his throne. Chamisa has refused to set up structures, running the new party as the only substantive office bearer.
His lieutenants have been secretly complaining and lobbying their benefactors to force Chamisa to set up structures. Some of them have sponsored the social media narratives being pushed by Professor Jonathan Moyo on the need for structures.
Professor of Politics, Stephen Chan was recently in the country where he directed Chamisa to come up with structures. In a semblance of compliance, Chamisa announced a shadow cabinet soon after Professor Chan’s visit. The move was intended to silence the growing cry for structures. However, the cry continues to get louder as supporters and benefactors demand proper structures before the 2023 polls.
