Sacked MDC Alliance deputy national chairperson, Job “Wiwa” Sikhala has vowed that he will not take his sacking laying down, as he still commands considerable following within the MDC Alliance.
Speaking during a no holds barred MDC Alliance 22nd anniversary celebrations, Sikhala declared that he still has the support of the people and only they can decide if he is a worthy leader or not.
“I live with the people, I know what people want and they are not interested in side shows. I still have a following even though I was demoted and MDC Alliance members continue to address me as their deputy national chairperson,” said Sikhala.
In clear defiance to the MDC Alliance leader, Nelson Chamisa’s demotion of Sikhala to an ordinary card carrying member, the former deputy national chairperson has vowed to reclaim his position, threatening to tear up an already fractured party.
“I will not sit on my laurels while people are bent on destroying the MDC Alliance party from within, a party that we founded those many years ago on the principle of Democracy.
“Let us defend what was born in 1999, by our pioneer generation led by the late Morgan Tsvangirai, Gibson Sibanda and Isaac Matongo. It was an idea that has to be passed from one generation to the other, an idea of Democracy, that is seemingly fading,” said Sikhala.
The MDC Alliance has been battling factionalism since its formation, with the recent spat between the Maruva Cabal and Chamisa faction threatening to further split that party. Resultantly Chamisa has become obsessed with consolidating his power through the purging of individuals who are not aligned to him. Furthermore as the country heads for the 2023 harmonised elections, Chamisa has suggested that his party skip primary elections and depend on communities selection of candidates, a proposal that is being resisted by many in the embattled party.
