Harare residents are hopeful for a cleaner, garbage-free city following the recent transfer of waste management responsibilities from the Harare City Council to Geo Pomona Waste Management Company. The agreement, approved by the Government on Monday, is seen as a decisive step towards resolving the city’s long-standing waste challenges.

In an interview with the media, this Wednesday, Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Daniel Garwe, confirmed the partnership, emphasizing its significance.
“Following an appeal by the City of Harare for Government intervention in waste management, Geo Pomona expressed interest in partnering with the City of Harare. The Government has approved this agreement,” he said.

Residents across the city expressed optimism, urging Geo Pomona to act swiftly.
“We have been paying rates but received no service as waste has accumulated for far too long,” one resident said.

Another added, “Geo Pomona should start immediately because we have suffered for too long.”
Experts believe outsourcing waste management is a step in the right direction.

Chairperson of the Zimbabwe Local Government Association, Dr Aaron Shamu noted, “Waste management is outsourced in many countries. What we are doing here aligns with international best practices.”

Chairperson of the Zimbabwe National Organisation of Associations and Residents Trust, Shalvar Chikomba also welcomed the development.
“As residents, we are happy with this partnership. People have endured poor waste management for too long,” he remarked.

During the Zimbabwe Local Government Association Conference on Tuesday, Harare Mayor, Councillor Jacob Mafume explained the city’s motivation behind the partnership.
“We aim to create a world-class city, including solid waste management. We’re pleased that we now have a modern waste management site at Pomona, which will tackle waste issues comprehensively,” he said.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa, also speaking at the conference, highlighted the importance of community consultation in delivering sustainable and efficient services. He expressed confidence that the partnership with Geo Pomona would permanently resolve Harare’s waste management issues, supporting the city’s quest to reclaim its “Sunshine City” status.
With modern infrastructure and a clear mandate, the partnership between Harare City Council and Geo Pomona Waste Management Company is expected to usher in a cleaner, healthier environment for all residents.
