Financially broke MDC Alliance has recently terminated contracts of all party workers, save for one, as the opposition party falls into financial doldrums.
According to a source within that party, the MDC Alliance secretary general Charlton Hwende, dropped the bombshell at a recent National Standing Committee (NSC) meeting held at that party’s new headquarters in Malbereign, Harare.
The source said party workers had not received salaries since January and most of them were now living as paupers. Various efforts to mobilise funds to pay workers’ outstanding salaries yielded little and the party was left with no option, but to dismiss its workers.
The source said only recently appointed Chief of Staff, Trust Mamombe who replaced fired Kudakwashe Matibhiri was spared from the axe. The source said some employees such as Head of Protocol, Brilliant Dube, Washington Gaga, Edith Sana Munyaka and David Zvavamwe Shambare, were fired because they were no longer paying allegiance to Nelson Chamisa, but to the organising secretary Amos Chibaya.
According to the source, Dube was fired after he was accused of leaking Chamisa’s itinerary to Masvingo to the media and purported state security agents. The fired workers were further accused of being sympathetic to MDC T president Douglas Mwonzora and leaking sensitive party information to the media and security forces in exchange for money.
Political analyst, Tafara Shumba said it was ironic that the MDC Alliance claims to represent workers’ right, but had the audacity to fire all workers. He added that the claim by the MDC Alliance that it will improve the welfare of workers once it came to power was just an empty rhetoric as history has shown that the party has no sympathy for workers.
Meanwhile, the source said the MDC Alliance is likely to be left homeless as former Zengeza legislator Tafadzwa Musekiwa who had leased his Malbereign house to the party is contemplating repossessing his house in retaliation to the demotion of his friend, Job Sikhala.
Chamisa last week demoted Sikhala from the position of national deputy chairperson to a card carrying member and this has irked Musekiwa who now wants to expel the MDC Alliance from his Malbereign house.
