Rural communities that have been lagging behind in terms of internet access have welcomed Government initiative of establishing Community Networks in all rural areas as it ushers in a level playing field in the education sector during this time of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Harare Post managed to speak to youths who were able to access internet services through the pioneer project at Murambinda Growth Point in Buhera.
“We are grateful to the Ministry of Information Communication Technology Postal and Courier Services (ICTPCS), together with TelOne for bringing us close to the global village.
“The COVID-19 pandemic made it clear that access to the internet is not a luxury, but a necessity. This time we were able to attend lessons through the internet and we are ready to write our exams with confidence,” said Bruce Togara, a student at Makumbe Mission in Buhera.
Tadiwanashe Svova, a teacher from Murambinda High School bemoaned the low pass rate that had afflicted rural schools due to lack of internet facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. He went on to commend Government for its countrywide project of installing Community Network centres in marginalised rural areas.
“The pass rate fell below the norm, and this was due to lack of classes because of the COVID-19 lockdown, which was made worse by the absence of internet access for rural students to conduct online lessons. Our work became difficult as teachers as we could not continue to be in touch with our students due to non-existent Information Communication Technologies.
“We are grateful to the Government for bringing access to the internet close to us and at affordable prices. The subscriptions are time based starting from US$0.50 per hour up to a monthly fee of US$10,” said Svova.
Meanwhile, the Government through its Ministry of ICTPCS is intensifying its efforts of bridging the digital divide between rural and urban communities by ensuring that every district in the country is reached, for the benefit of scholars and business.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of ICTPCS, Dr Samuel Kundishora said, “The Ministry intends to roll out Community Networks across the country”.
