Norton legislator, Themba Mliswa was yesterday arrested by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) while addressing the media at his house in Borrowdale.
Police national spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed Mliswa’s arrest saying he contravened the national lockdown orders.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Norton Member of Parliament, Temba Mliswa at his Borrowdale home today (yesterday) for contravening section 5 (3) (a) of the Public Health (Covid-19 Prevention, Containment and Treatment) (National Lockdown) (Consolidation and Amendment) Order, 2020, of Statutory Instrument 200/2020 as read with Statutory Instrument 10/2021, that is unlawful gathering, knowing that such gathering is prohibited,” said Assistant Commissioner Nyathi.
Meanwhile, the police have said they are committed to the observance of human rights, rights of children and ensure that police officers perform their duties in accordance with set standards.
This follows complains from the public after a picture of a woman and two minor children in police holding cells circulated on social media recently.
“The ZRP has taken note of the a photo which has gone viral on social media where a woman is seen in Police holding cells with two minor children at Rhodesville Police Station .This is really unfortunate.
“The ZRP is now conducting investigation with a view of finding out what really transpired and taking remedial action. The ZRP remains committed to the observance of human rights, rights of children and will ensure that police officers perform their duties in accordance with set standards, police Service Charter and above all, Section 219 of the constitution of the country,” reads the statement from the police.
Last Monday, police arrested a total of 3 282 people for defying Covid 19 regulations. Police are in full force enforcing lockdown regulations in a bid to curb the spread of the Covid 19 disease.
