MDC leader Nelson Chamisa affirmed that the MDC Youth and Women’s Assemblies were not active in the party, describing them as ‘useless’, Harare Post has learnt.
A frustrated party insider revealed to this publication that, the MDC Youth Assembly has been staging ill-fated demonstrations which are flopping only to justify their relevance and pacify Chamisa.
“The Youth Assembly has been receiving funds, though limited, from the party, but there has been no visibility programme they have designed, which frustrated Chamisa,” said the source.
On Tuesday, MDC Youth Assembly National Chairperson, Obey Sithole, Youth Secretary General Gift Ostallos Siziba and Youth Secretary for Information and Publicity, Tafadzwa Chirombe staged a mini demonstration between Julias Nyerere and Kwame Nkuruma in solidarity with MDC hooligan masquerading as a vendor, Hilton Tamanjani, who died in police custody when he was arrested after he and other 11 MDC hooligans viciously attacked a police officer in front of Morgan Richard Tsvangirai House(MRTH) in Harare.
According to the source, the plan for the mini demonstration was to provoke the police and cause a dramatic scene.
“Sithole had liaised with the private media to film and publish the intended dramatic scene, thereby attracting the attention of the international human rights defenders.
“However, the planned demonstration could not yield any meaningful results because neither did the general public show any interest in joining nor the police reacted violently to them.
“This behaviour was heavily castigated by onlookers particularly around OK 1st street following its temporary closure in fear of the violent MDC youths”, explained the insider.
Meanwhile, the MDC had planned to counter the Government planned and SADC backed anti-sanctions march, by staging counter demonstrations on Wednesday.
However, the demonstration flopped again as the general public did not show any appetite in participating.
“People are already suffering to be wasting time running around in streets. We are already suffering from the impacts of sanctions and cannot afford to accord attention to this drama by MDC youths”, commented a vendor near MRTH who preferred anonymity for fear of victimisation.
