The Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe has extended a lifeline to schoolchildren affected by the devastating Mbare Musika fire through a donation covering school fees and stationery. This gesture, announced during the “Hope Harbor” humanitarian aid event on Friday, underscores the enduring partnership between Zimbabwe and China.

Speaking at the event, Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Zhou Ding, commended the resilience of the Mbare community in the wake of the inferno, which occurred a month ago. The fire left thousands of traders in despair, with losses amounting to millions of dollars, prompting President Emmerson Mnangagwa to declare it a state of disaster.
“The Mbare Musika has long been a symbol of resilience and entrepreneurship. It is with great sorrow that I learned of the devastating fire. To complement the government’s recovery efforts, our embassy has decided to support schoolchildren from the most affected families in Mbare. Our goal is to ensure these children continue their education without disruption despite the hardships caused by this tragedy,” he said.
Ambassador Zhou emphasized the importance of investing in the younger generation, describing them as the future of Zimbabwe and key contributors to the nation’s progress. He expressed optimism that the support extended would bring hope to affected families and inspire a swift recovery of the Mbare Musika’s bustling economy.

The event also celebrated the longstanding friendship between Zimbabwe and China.
Ambassador Zhou highlighted China’s historical support for Zimbabwe, from its liberation struggle to significant infrastructure projects such as airports, power stations, schools, and hospitals. He noted ongoing collaboration with organizations like the Teen Rescue Mission (TRM) to empower local youth and communities.

Harare Metropolitan Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Charles Tavengwa highlighted that the event reinforced the Chinese Embassy’s commitment to working with Zimbabwean partners to uplift vulnerable communities.
“I hope the Mbare Musika will soon regain its prosperity. My colleagues and I will continue to cheer you on and celebrate your achievements,” he remarked.
This act of solidarity not only provides immediate relief but also strengthens the bonds between Zimbabwe and its “all-weather friend,” China.
