Eureka Gold Mine, located near Guruve, is making bold strides in its expansion programme, delivering not just increased gold output but also tangible benefits to surrounding communities in Guruve District. A key highlight of this drive has been the construction of over 50 modern houses for families displaced by mining activities.
To date, 53 families have been successfully resettled into newly built homes, as part of the mine’s robust corporate social responsibility and community development plan. This initiative underscores Eureka’s commitment to ensuring that development does not leave local communities behind.
The support by Eureka goes beyond bricks and mortar as education is also receiving a major boost.
During a recent site tour, yesterday, Mashonaland Central Province’s Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Christopher Magomo, commended the mine for its developmental role and affirmed the Government’s backing for partnerships that drive community upliftment.
“Your invitation is a reflection of the strong partnership that must exist between the Government and the private sector. We will continue to support Eureka and other mining operations in advancing development both within the sector and across the nation,” said Minister Magomo.
Eureka Mine Human Capital Support Services Manager, Tinago Tinago, announced plans to upgrade Muroyiwa Primary School, currently a satellite of Chimanikire Primary School, into a fully-fledged standalone institution.
“Here, where we are, is Muroyiwa Primary School. Since we are relocating people to this area, we plan to convert it into a full primary school. So far, we have built two classroom blocks, and we are working on a third,” said Tinago.
The mine’s General Manager, Nelson Banda, spoke positively about the mine’s growing footprint and its productive relationship with the local community and Government stakeholders.
“We are pleased with the cordial relations we have with the community and the support we continue to get from the Government. We hope to increase production owing to the expansion of our mine. Last year, the mine produced 1 800 kilogrammes of gold against a target of 1 700 kilogrammes,” he said.
Reopened in 2020 by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Eureka Gold Mine remains a pivotal player in Zimbabwe’s mining sector and a key contributor to the national goal of achieving an upper middle-income status by 2030. With its expansion drive firmly underway, the mine is setting an example of how responsible resource extraction can power inclusive development.
