Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has recovered 251 Police Anti-Riot Gear, this Saturday at Robinson House, corner Angwa and Kwame Nkuruma, near the MDC’s Morgan Richard Tsvangirai House (MRTH) headquarters in Harare.
The shocking incident came out after the police impounded upon 12 suspected MDC youth supporters who had violently attacked a uniformed (yet to be identified) ZRP officer at Bakers Inn, corner Kwame Nkuruma and Julius Nyerere.
The eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity narrated that “the suspected MDC hooligan, (Helton Tamanjani) dramatically approached the police officer and questioned him why he was trespassing the MRTH, citing that it was a ‘no go area for Zanu PF controlled police force’, to which the police officer responded that he had the right and freedom of movement.
“The heated conversation drew attention of two other MDC marshals who joined Tamanjani and fiercely hit the police officer, dragging him to the ground and left his uniform tattered.
“The police officer was rescued by a motorist who fled with him to Harare Central Police Station where the case was reported.”
The Police reaction group went on to raid the MRTH, following a tip-off that the suspected MDC hooligans were there, an aftermath which led to the discovery of 210 Anti-Police Riot Gear and 47 municipal helmets. The police arrested a total of 12 MDC youths at Robinson House basement where they were hiding.
In an interview, Tawanda Masango, a vendor at the nearby area commented that, the MRTH was a no go area for suspected Zanu PF supporters even those wearing Zanu PF regalia.
“Motorists are usually harassed by MDC marshals at MRTH who usually demand and pocket $10 parking fee exceeding the $3 pegged by the Harare City Council,” he bemoaned.
