Government through the Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) has unveiled a three year wheat contract farming worth USD$80 million to produce close to 150 000 metric tonnes of wheat annually.
In a press statement today the GMAZ said it had appointed a National Wheat Contract Farming Committee (NWCFC) to manage wheat contract farming for three years.
“The GMAZ has appointed a high powered technical committee to spearhead winter wheat contract farming for the next three years. The NWCFC will be chaired by GMAZ Chairman Tafadzwa Musarara and deputised by Graeme Murdoch of Paperhole Investments (PHI) and will be charged with responsibility to mobilize inputs and machinery for the production of at least 150,000 metric tonnes of wheat valued USD$80 million,” said GMAZ.
Winter wheat contract farming endeavours to expand wheat production in the country and ensure contracted farmers are fully provided with services required for wheat production.
“Winter wheat contract farming is going promote and expand contract farming activities in all suitable farming districts in Zimbabwe, attracting new investment locally and abroad. It shall also promote and supervise agro extension services for contracted farmers,” said GMAZ
The country is currently facing wheat shortages which have led the Government to import wheat from Russia to ensure bread is available. Production of wheat locally ensures the country has enough wheat for baking and makes it easier to produce low priced bread, Harare Post has learnt.
