Government has intensified its agricultural inputs distribution initiative in Gutu District, targeting key wards in a bid to strengthen food security and support farmers ahead of the critical planting season.
Beneficiaries in Wards 34 and 37 of Gutu Central have recently received farming inputs, marking a significant step in enhancing agricultural productivity and uplifting rural communities.
Gutu Ward 37 Councillor, Happymore Chipika confirmed the distribution's impact during an interview with the Harare Post.
“We received 1 864 bags of 2kg groundnuts, 1 570 bags of 2kg sunflower seeds, 1 864 bags of 2kg herbicides, and 294 bags of 2kg maize seed. The inputs came at the perfect time, and farmers have already begun planting,” said Chipika.
The timely delivery is seen as crucial for farmers who depend on the annual planting season for their livelihoods.
With the onset of rains, the provision of high-quality seeds and necessary inputs is anticipated to boost crop yields and enhance food security across the region.
Local farmers expressed their appreciation for the Government's support.
Faith Chidhakwa, a smallholder farmer from Ward 37, highlighted the relief the initiative brings.
“This support is a lifeline for us. Many of us were struggling to access quality seeds and inputs, but now we can plant with confidence. The seeds are of high quality, and we anticipate a better harvest this season,” Chidhakwa said.
Another beneficiary, Precious Zvirevo, praised the Government's intervention, emphasizing its role in enhancing productivity.
“I am really happy with the seeds and herbicides we received. They are exactly what we need to ensure our crops grow well and are protected from pests. This initiative gives us hope for a successful harvest this year,” Zvirevo noted.
The distribution is part of a broader Government strategy to fortify food security and bolster economic stability in rural areas, particularly in provinces like Gutu, where agriculture is the backbone of the economy.
Beyond providing seeds and herbicides, Government is implementing several programs to improve farming techniques and boost productivity across the agricultural sector.
