Zimbabwe’s population has grown by 16. 2% to reach 15 178 979 compared to 13 061 239 published on the 18th August 2012.
Speaking in a post Cabinet Briefing, Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Monica Mutsvangwa said of the total number, females constitute 7 889 421 whilst males are 7 289 558. Percentage proportions of males to females in 2012 and 2022 remains at 48% to 52% respectively.
“The nation is informed that the total population now stands at 15 178 979 comprising 7 289 558 males and 7 889 421 females. This is in comparison to the population as at the 18th August of 2012 which was 13 061 239 comprising 6 280 539 males and 6 780 700 females. The population increase as from 2012 is 16.2%. The proportion of male to female proportion in 2022 is 48 to 52 percent. The proportion of male to female population in 2012 was 48 percent to 52 percent respectively. In all provinces, the female population is higher than the male population. The overall gender ratio was 92 males per 100 females,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.
According to Minister Mutsvangwa, there has been a significant decrease in the number of people residing in the rural areas in 2022 compared to 2012. Despite the decline, rural areas still carries majority of population which stands at 61.4% compared to 67% in 2012. Zimbabwe’s annual growth rate between 2012 and 2022 stands at 1.5%, compared to 1.1% witnessed in 2012.
“The majority of the population in 2022 was in rural areas at 61.4% compared to 67% in 2012. The number of households in 2022 were 3 818 992, with the overall household size at 4.0 in contrast to 3 059 016 households and an overall household size of 4.2 in 2012. The annual population growth rate between 2012 and 2022 was 1.5%, compared to the growth rate of 1.1% witnessed in 2012. The national population density was 39 persons per square kilometre in 2022 compared to 33 in 2012.”
Zimbabwe’s Provincial population statistics are Harare 16%, Manicaland 13.4%, Mashonaland West 12.5%, Midlands 11.9%, Mashonaland East 11.4%, Masvingo 10.8%, Mashonaland Central 9.1%, Matabeleland North 5.5%, Matabeleland South 5% and Bulawayo 4.4%.
