Zanu PF led Pfura Rural District Council (RDC), has issued a public statement clarifying the controversial procurement of a Samsung S23 Ultra, dismissing claims of corruption as a result of a currency misinterpretation.
The council emphasised that the transaction was conducted in full compliance with Zimbabwean procurement laws.
Recent social media reports alleged that the council had misused public funds by purchasing the smartphone for a staggering US$40 560.00. However, in an official statement released by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Stanlous Nyachowe, Pfura RDC clarified that the figure was accurate but in Zimbabwean Dollars (ZWL), not United States Dollars (USD).
"The figure of 40 560 is accurate in relation to the contract value; however, the currency referenced in the circulated reports is incorrect. The stated amount pertains to Zimbabwean Dollars (ZWL), not United States Dollars (USD)," read the statement.
Pfura RDC further reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability, urging the public to verify information through official channels before spreading unverified claims.
Notably, social media activist, Freeman Chari, who had initially amplified the corruption allegations, has since retracted his statements after the council's clarification.
Chari admitted that the misinformation had caused unnecessary public outrage and commended the council for setting the record straight.
"On this one, it does appear the tender was in ZWL although the Government website says USD.I really feel sorry for them,” Chari said.
Even social media activist Tirimusango Hwenje, who had initially accused the council of corruption, has since deleted his posts following Pfura RDC's clarification.
Local residents expressed relief at the council’s swift response, with some stating that they were surprised by the corruption allegations in the first place.
"We were shocked by the claims because the council has been operating transparently. This clarification is reassuring, and we commend the CEO for addressing the issue promptly," said Tendai Moyo, a resident of Pfura.
Another resident, Sarah Ndlovu, added, "Misinformation can damage reputations unnecessarily. We trust our council and appreciate their openness in clearing the air."
The Pfura RDC has encouraged the public to direct any further inquiries to its official communication channels, reinforcing its dedication to good governance and service delivery.
