A multi-sectoral approach to Cholera outbreak

Government has developed a multi-sectoral approach centered on water and sanitation as another solution to control the spread of Cholera in the country.

Speaking during the 16th Post Cabinet Briefing yesterday, the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Monica Mutsvangwa informed members of the public that in a bid to fight the outbreak of Cholera, Government had resolved to adopt a multi-sectoral approach with a focus on water and sanitation.

“In light of the continued increase in Cholera cases, Cabinet has resolved as follows; that the multi-sectoral approach to responding to the Cholera outbreak be continued with a focus to address water and sanitation, and that the Ministry of Health and Child Care, working closely with the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, intensify timely releases of funds to facilitate the Cholera comprehensive response,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.

Minister Mutsvangwa informed the nation that a cumulative 154 317 suspected Cholera cases have been reported on the African continent with 2 747 deaths, reflecting a Case Fatality Rate of 1.78%.She further stated that Zimbabwe had so far recorded 2 076 cases, with 1 942 recoveries and 15 deaths, reflecting a Case Fatality Rate of 2.3%.

According to the Minister, to date, all the country’s ten provinces had reported Cholera suspected cases with Manicaland, Harare and Matabeleland South Provinces contributing 83% of the country`s cases. Cholera confirmed deaths have been recorded in Harare, Manicaland, Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland West and Masvingo.
