Despite calls from different angles for a peaceful election season, the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) continues to engage in violence as the nation draws closer to this year`s harmonized general election, Harare Post has learnt.
A source who spoke to this publication today revealed that four CCC gang fatally attacked a ZANU PF Chasunga District Secretary for Security in Mbire constituency, Anyway Chiukise on 4 June in the evening. According to the source, Chiukise was coming from Chief Chasunga`s house who lives in same ward when he met the CCC gang.
The source revealed that the gang confronted Chiukise and instructed him to chant CCC slogans. The gang attacked Chiukise using sticks after he denied to chant the CCC slogans highlighting that he was not aware of that party`s slogans. The source revealed that the gang fled the scene leaving Chiukise for dead. However, the victim was rescued by passerby who reported the case to Police. The culprits are still at large and the police are hunting for them.
CCC continues to engage in political violence ahead of this year`s election. This is in contrast to President Emmerson Mnangagwa`s call for peace before, during and after elections. According to the source, CCC failed to lure voters in the rural areas through its Mugwazo programme and it has resorted to violence so as to intimidate voters ahead of this year`s election. The party is targeting ZANU PF and their influential leaders.
Meanwhile, on 5 May 2023, the ZANU PF Chiroti District Youth Chairman, Thando Mugoni was attacked and stabbed on his left side by CCC activist, Tawanda Mashiri. Last Month, 20 CCC activists in Masvingo attacked two ZANU PF members and left them for dead.
