…as Gvt aims to strengthen capacities for good labour migration

The Government of Zimbabwe has been commended for its continued leadership and firm commitment in promoting good migration governance as it is set to establish Migrant Resource Centres in both Harare and Bulawayo.

This was said by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Zimbabwe Chief of Mission, Mario Lito Malanca, in a press statement ahead of a regional training workshop to be held in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.

Malanca acknowledged the steady progress in the implementation of the National Labour Migration Policy by the Government of Zimbabwe saying it will go a long way in laying ground work for migrants.

“The Policy will be a vital component of Zimbabwe’s recovery efforts from Covid-19 and in addressing access to decent working opportunities in countries of destination.

“The establishment of the Migrant Resource Centres in Harare and Bulawayo will provide the much needed avenue for migrants to facilitate pre-departure orientation, inform on the dangers of Human Trafficking, whilst also facilitating referrals to service providers,” said Malanca.

In reference to the scheduled workshop, Malanca said, “The workshop will focus on various topics including the International and Regional frameworks for the protection of migrant workers in Southern Africa, exploring data from the regional assessment on ethical recruitment and the protection of migrant workers in the context of Mixed Migration and labour mobility.

“The workshop reaffirms the importance of international cooperation in facilitating international mobility, including cross border recruitment,” said Malanca.

This workshop comes at a time Zimbabweans in South Africa are facing a threat of losing their jobs due to lack of proper papers and procedures.  The Migrant Resource Centres will go a long way in ensuring that ethical recruitment is done and also avoid human trafficking by faceless recruitment agencies.
