Chaos reigns supreme within MDC-T

Chaos and serious infighting has rocked the opposition MDC-T party leading to the suspension of its deputy president Dr Thokozani Khupe who is accused of committing various acts of misconduct.

Yesterday, MDC-T Secretary for Information and Publicity, Witness Dube released a statement confirming the suspension of Dr Khupe pending investigations into her alleged acts of misconduct.

“The MDC-T wishes to advise that First Vice President Dr. Thokozani Khupe has been suspended. A letter dated 12 January 2022 was personally delivered to Dr. Khupe and her legal team. The suspension was with immediate effect, pending investigations into various allegations levelled against her.

“Investigations are being conducted by a team led by the party’s Arbiter General. The suspension is in line with the party constitution and is a result of issues that arose. Once the said issues are investigated and fully resolved, the party will communicate such,” said Dube.

However, Dr Khupe’s lawyer Nqobani Sithole has dismissed Khupe’s suspension letter as null and void.

“Khupe received a letter from Douglas Togarepi Mwonzora indicating that Khupe has been suspended due to some issues. As Khupe’s lawyers when we went through the suspension letter we noted that it’s just a piece of paper with no meaningful content.

“Mwonzora is the one who is no longer in the party. There are many people who were expelled from the party after they declared that they were members of other parties. Mwonzora wrote a letter to ZEC (Zimbabwe Electoral Commission) on January 3, 2022, saying he is the leader or president of the MDC Alliance. As a result, a person who is the leader of the MDC Alliance cannot say he is expelling a member of the MDC-T. So, this issue of suspending a person who is not a member of his party is null and void. It does not work that way,” said Sithole.

Meanwhile, Dr Khupe has called for a press conference to be held in Bulawayo today. Khupe is expected to state her position concerning her suspension.
