Hwende working to appease Chamisa

Under fire MDC Alliance Secretary General, Charlton Hwende is reportedly trying to appease that party’s leader, Nelson Chamisa, to avoid the axe that is hovering upon his head.

Hwende, a key member of the Maruva cabal garnering for the dethronement of Chamisa, has made a U-turn and is begging Chamisa to forgive him and not to demote him from his position of Secretary General.

An insider within the MDC Alliance told this publication that at a recent National Standing Committee meeting, Hwende bellowed that there were people who were mudslinging him with a view to causing his expulsion from the party.

“At the NSC meeting, Hwende denied ever being a member of the Maruva cabal and accused some members of tarnishing his image by aligning him with the cabal. Hwende said he had names of people who are opposed to Chamisa and he threatened to expose them if they continue tarnishing his image,” said the source.

Hwende reportedly threatened to single-out some senior members whom he claimed were working with the western embassies to dethrone Chamisa.

According to the source, Hwende was making frantic efforts to de-associate himself from the Maruva cabal after he was approached by a close and senior ally of Chamisa who hinted to him of his imminent expulsion.

The senior member reportedly advised Hwende that he should either throw members of the Maruva cabal under the bus and publicly declare his allegiance to Chamisa or risk being dethroned as the Secretary General and eventually sink together with other Maruva cabal members.

The source added that Hwende, who until recently was Chamisa’s confidante, resolved to make peace with Chamisa and cut ties with the Maruva cabal.

“Hwende is afraid of being expelled from the party considering that he was also recalled from Parliament. He doesn’t want to be left with no position in the party, hence his decision to publicly declare his allegiance to Chamisa,” said the source.

The MDC Alliance is currently sharply divided into two distinct factions with one faction is in favour of Chamisa’s continued stay at the helm of the party, while the Maruva cabal has lost confidence in Chamisa’s leadership.
