The construction of a lithium processing plant in Zvishavane, owned by Zheli Mining Investments, is nearing completion, with the final phase almost done.
The US$1.5 million facility, which has the capacity to process 500 tonnes of lithium ore per day, is expected to commence operations next month.
During a recent tour of the facility last Saturday, Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Owen Ncube, underscored the strategic importance of the project, highlighting its role in driving Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 economic goals.
“We gather here not only to witness the remarkable advancement in lithium mining but also to reflect on the broader potential of our province’s rich mineral endowments, which include gold in various districts. These resources are vital to our national socio-economic development and integral to the aspirations outlined in our Vision 2030,” said Minister Ncube.
Zheli Mining Investments General Manager, Kudakwashe Zimhondi, expressed confidence in the project’s progress, highlighting that the plant has already undergone a successful dry run to ensure all systems are functioning optimally.
“We have since completed the installation phase and conducted a dry run to test its efficiency. So far, we are excited about the results. Government’s support for the lithium industry has been instrumental in our success, and we appreciate their efforts in creating an enabling environment for investment,” said Zimhondi.
Once fully operational, the lithium plant is expected to create employment opportunities for local communities, contributing to economic empowerment and skills development in Zvishavane.
Zimbabwe continues to position itself as a key player in the global lithium market, attracting significant investment in the sector.
With demand for lithium soaring due to its use in electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy storage, projects like this are set to enhance Zimbabwe’s standing as a competitive lithium producer.
Meanwhile, the mining sector remains a key pillar of Zimbabwe’s economic growth, with lithium mining emerging as a major contributor to the country’s industrial and export potential.
