MDC-Alliance Masvingo Youth Assembly Secretary General, Councillor for ward 18, Chiredzi West Constituency Gilbert Mutubuki will today appear in Court at the Masvingo Provincial Magistrate court facing charges of convening illegal gatherings with intent to cause public violence.
Mutubuki who was on the run after nine of his accomplices were arrested, handed himself to ZRP Masvingo in the company of a Zimbabwe Human Rights Lawyer Martin Mureri.
Mutubuki together with nine others staged unsanctioned demonstrations at Mhandamabwe Business Centre in Chivi on 14 March 2021.
Meanwhile, four MDC Alliance activists charged with disorderly conduct at Harare Magistrate court where they had gone to show solidarity with the MDC Alliance activist, Makomborero Haruzivishe last week, were denied bail yesterday.
Harare magistrate Richard Mangosi ruled that MDC-Alliance Women’s National Assembly Executive Committee member Vongai Tome, together with Kudakwashe Butau, Ngonidzashe Mupumba, and Patrick Shumba, were likely to abscond if released because they were facing a serious offence and remanded them to 26 April 2021.
The magistrate said evidence against the accused was overwhelming as they were arrested on the crime scene and the court was of the view that this might compel them to abscond if released on bail.
The four were arrested outside the court last Tuesday as police dispersed opposition supporters gathered in solidarity with Haruzivishe, who was slapped with a 14 months’ prison sentence for public violence and resisting arrest.
In denying the trio bail, Magistrate Mangosi stated that they had a case to answer, hence releasing them on bail will jeopardize the administration or interests of justice.
The MDC-Alliance is employing their usual tactics of provoking the Government to create headlines and gain sympathy.
The opposition has over the past years built its politics on uncalled-for street protests that often result in violence and destruction of properties.
