The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) Deputy Secretary General and former Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Union (ZCTU), Secretary General Wellington Chibhebhe has been fingered in the demonstration that the ZCTU is plotting.
According to a contact privy to the plot, the demonstration is intended to coincide with the commemoration of the Day of Solidarity of Zimbabwean workers tomorrow in Harare.
“The demonstration is expected to be staged tomorrow and is being spearheaded by the former ZCTU Secretary General Wellington Chibhebhe and ZCTU.
“However, the MDC-Alliance is also involved in the demonstration, but has agreed with the ZCTU for the later to be at the forefront. The fliers are ready for distribution,” said the contact.
The contact revealed that this demonstration was being funded by the ITUC.
“The ICTU is funding the demonstration. The organisation has also mobilised its affiliation members to stage protests at the Zimbabwean embassies in various countries,” revealed the contact.
The ICTU is the world`s largest trade union federation.
However, political analysts have condemned the meddling of ICTU in the internal affairs of Zimbabwe. They argue that demonstrations affect business operations resulting in the loss of employment for the workers they purport to represent.
One political analyst, Innocent Masocha from the University of Zimbabwe said, “The ICTU has lost its mandate of promoting and defending the rights of workers and interests. Demonstrations destroy the economy. In the Zimbabwean situation, we all know the outcomes of the opposition party MDC demonstrations. They all end in violence and destruction of people`s property,” said Masocha.
