Mashayamombe on the run

By Tawanda Musariri

Losing MDC Alliance candidate for Harare South constituency, Shadreck Mashayamombe is in hiding as police is hard on his heels.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has issued a wanted person notice for the fugitive politician together with nine others suspected of having masterminded acts of violence during the violent shut down demonstration last week.

In a statement yesterday, the police said, "The following people are wanted by CID LAW AND ORDER for participating in the recent violence, rampant looting, incitement on social media and destruction of property:

  1. SIMBARASHE BERNARD Alias JUMA
  2. ISHMAEL KAUNZANI (44)
  3. DENFORD NGADZIORE (35)
  4. PROMISE MKHWANANZI (35)
  5. SHADRECK MASHAYAMOMBE (35)
  6. MUNYARADZI SHOKO
  7. PETER GIFT MUTASA (41)
  8. LOVEMORE CHINOPUTSA
  9. RASHID MAHIYA
  10. CHRISTINE MAGORIMBO Alias MAI CHIUTSI

"Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the persons should contact their nearest Police Station."

Mashayamombe's name is not new to violence accusations. During the 2018 Commission of Inquiry hearings over the August 1 violence, Mashayamombe's name featured prominently in witness accounts who accused him of having a hand in the arson attack at Zanu PF Harare Province office. The attack on the offices left scores of vehicles burnt down to ashes, windows pelted with stones and staff nursing varying degrees of injury.

The trail of destruction on August 1 left six people dead.

In the latest suspicions surrounding Mashayamombe, a police station at Mbudzi roundabout on Highglen Road was attacked, ransacked and had two police trucks burnt down to ashes. Mashayamombe is suspected to be the kingpin of this attack.

Also, the other wanted fugitives are prominent members of the MDC Alliance with close links to the party's violence firm, the Vanguard.
