Housing construction for war vets escalates in Manicaland

War veterans in Manicaland Province are beginning to experience the long-anticipated benefits of the Presidential War Veterans Empowerment Programmes, as housing construction and borehole installations gain momentum, transforming lives in Buhera District and beyond.

Through the Presidential War Veterans Housing Scheme and Borehole Sinking Programme, the Second Republic is delivering on its commitment to honour and empower the country’s liberation heroes with dignity, security, and practical support.

In Buhera, the impact is already visible. New homes for war veterans are rising steadily, while boreholes are being drilled to bring clean water, not only to the beneficiaries, but also to surrounding communities.

These developments mark a significant step toward improving rural infrastructure and livelihoods.

In a recent interview with the media, War Veterans League’s Manicaland Provincial Secretary for Transport and Welfare, Cde Nelson Mahamba, hailedthe developments as a true fulfilment of the values and aspirations for which the liberation struggle was fought.

“This is what we stood for. Decent housing and access to clean water reflect the dignity and respect war veterans deserve. The boreholes are also a gateway to farming and self-sustenance, and we are grateful for this Presidential support,” said Mahamba.

Group Public Relations Manager at Prevail International, Tariro Dondo emphasised that Prevail International, is one of the implementing partners of the programme, and confirmed that the empowerment initiatives are being fast-tracked to reach all corners of the country.

Every province has already begun receiving empowerment funds.

“We are implementing these Presidential programmes with urgency and care. Housing projects like this one in Buhera are already underway in several provinces. The goal is for every war veteran to benefit,” said Dondo.

While war veterans are the primary beneficiaries, with communities in Buhera are also feeling the positive ripple effects of the initiative.

Local residents no longer have to walk long distances to fetch water, thanks to the strategically located boreholes.

“These boreholes have changed our lives. Before this, we used to walk over two kilometres to access water. Now, clean water is right in our village and a real blessing,” said a grateful community member.

The empowerment package, launched by President Emmerson Mnangagwa earlier this month, includes a range of support mechanisms, such as title deeds, revolving business funds, farming equipment, and housing, tailored specifically for the needs of liberation war veterans.

As the programmes unfold, they serve not only as a symbol of national gratitude but also as a practical foundation for improving lives — ensuring that the sacrifices of Zimbabwe’s liberation heroes are matched by action that secures their future.
