The Government, through the Ministry of Environment, Tourism and Hospitality Industry together with the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) is set to launch a National Clean-up Campaign this Wednesday, as Government pushes for restoration of the nation’s clean environment.
The Ministry revealed that the national campaign is set to provide a clean, safe and healthy environment, and ensure a sustainable clean and green environment, by inculcating a culture of cleanliness among citizens.
“The country’s image has been negatively impacted with road servitudes, with towns and cities becoming heavily littered, therefore the need for a holistic and all- inclusive approach to address the waste management challenge that has bedevilled the country for more than a decade now,” said the Ministry.
To put an end to this issue, different sector players (public and private) have been engaged to initiate sustainable waste management practices within their areas of influence.
Multiple problems have been caused by waste, and has exposed the general public to disease outbreaks and epidemics such as cholera and typhoid, a situation Government intends to avert.
In a statement, EMA said that the national event would be launched in Harare, at Highfield, Bulawayo at Large City Hall , Masvingo at Garikai Market, Manicaland at Meikles Park, Matebeleland South in Beitbridge, Matebeleland North at Hwange, Midlands at Gweru Town House, Mash East in Marondera, Mash West in Chinhoyi and Mash Central at Bindura Market Place.
The campaign will be running under the theme “Zero tolerance to litter – my environment, my pride.”
