Mozambique celebrates a historic milestone, this Wednesday, 50 years of independence, and Zimbabwestands proudly alongside its neighbour, as a key ally and enduring
friend.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa is among several heads of state expected to attend the golden jubilee celebrations, reaffirming Zimbabwe’s deep-rooted solidarity with Mozambique.
The event, set to take place in the capital, Maputo, under the theme “50 years of independence: Consolidating national unity, peace and sustainable development”, marks half a century since the late President Samora Machel proclaimed Mozambique’s independence on June 25, 1975.
Zimbabwe’s participation in the celebrations is both symbolic and strategic, reflecting a longstanding relationship forged through shared history, mutual support during the liberation struggles of both nations, and growing economic cooperation.
In an interview with the media yesterday, Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Mozambique, Victor Matemadanda, said the President’s visit is a strong statement of continued friendship and commitment.
“Zimbabwe is participating, obviously, as a cornerstone friend. What Zimbabwe is and will be can never be explained without mentioning Mozambique.
“We also stood with Mozambique during its own difficult times, and the coming of President Mnangagwa to celebrate this milestone is an assurance to the people of Mozambique that the bond remains strong,” said Ambassador Matemadanda.
He noted that the ties between the two nations go beyond politics, extending into social, cultural, and economic spheres.
“This friendship will be further strengthened through President Mnangagwa’s presence at the 50th anniversary of Mozambique’s independence,” he added.
On the economic front, Ambassador Matemadandaemphasised the importance of converting strong political relations into increased trade and investment.
“There are a lot of programmes being done by ZimTrade and other business organisations in Zimbabwe, which we think are going to add value to the development initiatives and capacities of Zimbabwe and trade in Mozambique,” he said.
As Mozambique reflects on five decades of sovereignty, unity, and development, Zimbabwe’s show of support highlights the enduring bond between the two Southern African nations. The golden jubilee is not only a celebration of independence, but also a moment to strengthen bilateral cooperation, build economic partnerships, and affirm the shared vision of peace and prosperity for the region.
