MRP in turmoil as ousted leader Moyo refuses to relinquish power

Moyo's steadfast refusal to relinquish his position, coupled with his allegations that his ouster is colluding with the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) to undermine Mthwakazi Republic Party's (MRP) sway in the Matabeleland region, has instigated a state of upheaval and unrest within the party.

In a defiant interview, Moyo labelled the interim committee led by co-chairpersons Thembisani Mpofu and Chilumbo Mudenda, as "impostors" and dismissed their authority.

"This revolution cannot be stopped by people who are pleasing our enemies,” said Moyo.

However, the interim leadership and MRP officials maintain that Moyo’s time as leader has come to an end.

Mbonisi Gumbo, the interim party spokesperson, clarified the party's stance, stating, “Moyo and other members have not been fired. They remain part of MRP, but they no longer possess the authority to act in their former capacities. Their future within the party is contingent upon the democratic processes at the upcoming congress.”

A source close to the situation revealed that the conflict goes beyond mere power struggles within MRP.

According to the source, there are growing concerns that Moyo’s allegations against the CCC are a calculated attempt to divert attention from the internal issues plaguing the party.

"Moyo is trying to create an external enemy to consolidate his support base and distract from the legitimate concerns raised about his leadership,” the source explained.

Political analyst, Nobleman Runyanga said that the political turmoil within MRP posed significant challenges to that party’s stability and effectiveness in the Matabeleland regions.

“With Moyo refusing to accept the interim committee’s authority and the allegations of external interference, the party finds itself at a critical crossroads,” said Runyanga.

The upcoming MRP congress is expected to be a decisive moment in determining the future direction of MRP and resolving the leadership conundrum.
