A Zimbabwean national, Joacham Chivayo (33) was arrested alongside a South African, Ayanda Brian Gungwa (20), for the illegal possession of gold following a raid at Helderwyk Estate, Brakpan.

The arrest was made by the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation team, which seized six bars of unwrought gold valued at approximately R15 million.

At around 1315 hours on 26 November 2024, the Hawks executed a well-coordinated operation, leading to the apprehension of the suspects while they were attempting to find a buyer for the gold.
“Approximately R15 million worth of gold was seized,” said the South African Criminal Justice System on a post on X, confirming the scale of the illegal trade.

Both suspects have been charged under the Precious Metals Act (Act 37 of 2005), which regulates the handling and trade of precious metals.
The charges include illegal possession of gold, and the case has been registered at Brakpan Police Station.

Following their arrest, the duo made their first court appearance on 27 November 2024.
“The duo made their first court appearance, on November 27, 2024. They were remanded in custody,” the Criminal Justice System tweeted.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the origin of the gold and are working to uncover any further suspects involved in this illegal trade.
The Hawks' operation was part of ongoing efforts to dismantle organized crime syndicates involved in illegal mining and precious metal trade.

This latest arrest highlights increasing concern around illegal gold mining activities in South Africa.

As the investigation progresses, the Hawks have vowed to continue their work in tracing the sources of illicit gold and targeting those responsible.
“Further investigations are underway to trace the origin of the gold and to identify any additional suspects involved in this illegal trade,” the South African Criminal Justice System stated on X.

Authorities are calling on the public to assist in providing information that could help curb the illegal trade of gold and ensure that those involved face justice.
