The Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution in Mashonaland East, Advocate Itayi Ndudzo, has issued a stern warning to land barons and called for a united community response against the illegal parcelling of state and communal land.

Speaking at the launch of the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC)’s anti-corruption campaign in Mahusekwa yesterday,  Minister Ndudzo described illegal land deals as a direct threat to development and the national vision.

“Illegal land transactions are like weeds in a garden if  left unchecked, they choke the life out of legitimate growth and development of the province. The issue, if ignored, will destroy the vision of His Excellency Dr E.D. Mnangagwa of becoming an upper middle-income economy by 2030,” said Minister Ndudzo

He said illegal land sales not only undermine the financial base of local councils but also lead to chaotic settlements, disease outbreaks, and pressure on already strained infrastructure.

“Moreover, the occupation of wetlands and areas under ZESA power lines exacerbates these issues, posing serious threats to both public safety and environmental integrity.  These regions are vital ecosystems and crucial for our community’s resilience against climate change,” Minister Ndudzo warned.

Minister Ndudzo urged traditional leaders to play their part in fighting land corruption.

“To our chiefs and village heads   you are the custodians of your communities. I call upon you to educate your communities about the importance of following proper procedures when acquiring land and stop anyone who approaches you to engage in these dirty deals,” he said.

He also called on residents to reject shortcuts and follow legal land application channels.

“Apply for stands through your local councils or, for agricultural land, through the Ministry of Lands. This is not merely a bureaucratic formality; it is a safeguard against the perils of illegal land sales. The law is vigilant. Those who operate outside its boundaries will face penalties,” Minister Ndudzo cautioned.

The Mahusekwa campaign launch marks the beginning of a province-wide awareness blitz, with ZACC expected to engage more communities in coming days through public meetings, outreach programs, and collaboration with traditional leaders and local authorities.
