A medical camp held at Parirenyatwa Hospital from November 11 to 15, 2024, concluded on a high note with the successful completion of 10 life-saving heart surgeries.
The initiative, which aimed to provide crucial cardiac treatment to Zimbabweans, was a collaborative effort between the Government of Zimbabwe, Gift of Life International, local surgeons, and the Rotary Club of Harare Central.
It also received expert support from a visiting team of 10 cardiac specialists from the University of Cairo, Egypt.
Speaking at a press briefing during the camp, Egypt’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe emphasized the long-standing ties between the two countries, highlighting Egypt’s continued commitment to supporting Zimbabwe.
“The relationship between Egypt and Zimbabwe dates back to the liberation struggle, and we remain committed to supporting Zimbabwe, our African sister. We believe in African solutions to African problems.” said the Ambassador.
The visiting team, led by Professor, Dr. Hashman Shawky underscored the importance of this initiative, not only in saving lives but in transforming them. He shared the story of Blessing, a former recipient of the heart surgery from 20 years ago, who is now a medical doctor. “This is not a one-off event; it’s an ongoing process. We’ve worked closely with local medical professionals, and together, we will continue to make a difference,” Prof. Shawky stated.
A leading surgeon at Parirenyatwa, Dr. Machawira, confirmed that the medical camp had successfully performed 10 heart surgeries over the course of three days. He expressed optimism for future projects, noting that with continued support, the hospital could eventually perform three surgeries per week, potentially reaching 150 surgeries per month.
“The Government of Zimbabwe has been instrumental in this initiative, providing the necessary funding through a grant that allowed us to kickstart the project in 2023.
“We have also received significant support from Avenues Clinic, who provided both material and personnel assistance.” said Dr. Machawira
The medical camp also benefited numerous individuals, including 9-year-old Makomborero Muringazuva, whose mother, Maud Rwanga, expressed her deep gratitude. “I would like to thank the Government, the doctors, and everyone involved for making this surgery possible. The cost of such procedures abroad can reach up to $10,000, but we’ve received this help locally, and my child is now recovering,” Rwanga said.
With this successful camp, Parirenyatwa Hospital is hopeful that future initiatives will continue to provide life-changing surgeries, improving the health and well-being of many Zimbabweans in need.
