Kutsaga to host 75th anniversary research symposium

Kutsaga Research Station will next week host a high-level research symposium to mark 75 years of excellence in agricultural research and innovation.

The event will take place on Wednesday, 12 June 2025,at the University of Zimbabwe, under the theme: “Beyond 75 Years, Kutsaga Innovation and Agricultural Excellency in the Next 25 Years.”

Kutsaga Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Frank Magama,said the symposium was not just a celebration, but a strategic gathering to shape the future of Zimbabwe’s agriculture through science and innovation.

"Kutsaga has been a cornerstone of agricultural research in Zimbabwe for 75 years. This symposium is not only a celebration of our achievements, but also a strategic opportunity to shape the direction of agricultural innovation in the next 25 years. Our focus is on climate-smart agriculture, sustainability, and supporting national development goals,” said Dr.Magama in an interview with this publication.

Dr. Magama said the event aligns with Government’s thrust towards modernising agriculture in line with Vision 2030, which aims to transform Zimbabwe into an upper-middle income economy.

“Our legacy is built on science, and our future will be built on innovation,” he added.

The Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Dr. Anxious Jongwe Masuka, is expected to attend the event as Guest of Honour.

Kutsaga has invited students, professionals, start-ups, innovators, researchers, tobacco industry players, and other businesses to attend the commemorative event.

The symposium will feature expert presentations, exhibitions, and thought leadership sessions focusing on climate-smart solutions and sustainable farming practices.

Established in 1950, Kutsaga has played a critical role in agricultural advancement, particularly in tobacco research, plant breeding, seed production, and sustainable farming systems.

Its work continues to support Zimbabwe’s economic development and agricultural transformation in line with national priorities.
