Government has approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), with Zambia, to facilitate the development of a new pipeline system for transporting refined petroleum products.

The MOU was disclosed by Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Jenfan Muswere, during a post-cabinet press briefing, held in Harare, today.

According to Minister Muswere, the pipeline project aims to leverage Zimbabwe's existing capacity for oil and gas storage, processing, and transportation, as well as Zambia's growing demand for affordable and efficient energy use.

"Cabinet approved the Memorandum of Understanding between the Republic of Zimbabwe and the Republic of Zambia in Facilitating Private Sector Development and Implementation of the Zimbabwe-Zambia Oil Products and Natural Gas Pipelines Project," Muswere said.

The proposed pipeline will transport refined petroleum products from Zimbabwe to Zambia, reducing the reliance on road transportation and its associated risks. Muswere highlighted that one of the key benefits of the project is the expected reduction in damage to road infrastructure, as fuel tankers will be taken off the roads.

The MOU is a testament to the strengthening bilateral relations between Zimbabwe and Zambia, with both countries seeking to enhance economic cooperation and development. The pipeline project is expected to promote efficient energy use, reduce transportation costs, and foster private sector growth.

While details on the implementation timeline and project costs are yet to be disclosed, the MOU marks a significant step towards regional integration and cooperation. As the project progresses, it is expected to have a positive impact on the economies of both Zimbabwe and Zambia, promoting economic growth and development.
