The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has dismissed as false and misleading widely circulating social media claims that Churchill Road, in Harare, will be closed starting 9 June, 2025,for a major road expansion project.

In an official statement issued today, the Ministry categorically denied any plans to shut down the road, calling the information, “entirely untrue.”

The rumours had suggested a full closure of Churchill road until late November 2025 to allow for a four-lane expansion, a claim the Ministry says has no basis.

“We are aware of false social media reports circulating today claiming that Churchill Road will close from 9 June until 28 November 2025 for a four-lane expansion project. Please be advised that these claims are entirely untrue as Churchill Road remains fully open to traffic, and the road closure or construction work is yet to be effected,” the Ministry said.

The Ministry emphasized that any legitimate infrastructure development works, including road closures, will only be communicated through official Government platforms.

“We reaffirm our commitment to transparent communication: should any future road closures be approved, the public will be notified well in advance through official channels, including the Ministry’s website, verified social media accounts, and all Government platforms,” the statement read.

The Ministry also called on the public to remain vigilant against misinformation, especially on social media platforms where unverified content can spread quickly and create unnecessary panic.

“We urge the motoring public and residents to disregard these rumours. We advise citizens to rely on verified sources for updates on infrastructure projects, traffic advisories, and road conditions,” the Ministry added.

Officials reiterated that should any future works be undertaken, full public notice would precede the commencement of such projects.

The Ministry concluded its statement by assuring citizens that it continues to prioritize infrastructure development with minimal disruption to traffic flow, and that engagement with communities will remain central to any major public works planning.

Meanwhile, this publication observed today that there was no disruption to traffic on Churchill Road, and no signs of construction-related activity.
