President Emmerson Mnangagwa has called for an intensified crackdown on drug lords and substance abuse networks, urging national security agencies and communities to work together in the fight against the growing menace.
Speaking at the National Youth Day Commemorations, in Bulawayo,the President emphasized that there will be no exceptions in the battle against drugs, declaring that all involved in the trade must be rooted out.
"Drug lords must be flushed out. I urge all to work with national security agencies in the fight against drug and substance abuse. Let us work together in this effort.
“Some of our young people continue to fall victim to drug and substance abuse, among other societal vices. In the ongoing war effort against drug and substance abuse, there are no sacred cows. Drug lords must be flushed out and supply chains destroyed." he said
President Mnangagwa also urged communities, both urban and rural, to refrain from sheltering criminals and instead collaborate with law enforcement.
"I urge us all to collaborate and work hand in hand with the national security agencies and other stakeholders in the justice system. This should see us strengthening community-led crime detection and fighting networks. Together, let us strive to achieve a drug-free society. That is the Zimbabwe we all want," he added.
He expressed gratitude to the leadership of Bulawayo Metropolitan Province for their efforts in organizing the event and acknowledged the role of youth empowerment programs in nation-building.
The President praised the re-branded Youth Service in Zimbabwe Programme for its role in molding disciplined, patriotic, and ideologically rooted citizens.
"These must include tailor-made programs for our youth, including graduates from Vocational Training Centres, the National Youth Service, and Tertiary Institutions. The testimonials and displays from members of the Youth Service in Zimbabwe Programme are impressive," he said
The event showcased the discipline and inclusivity of the rebranded Youth Service, with President Mnangagwa commending the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Development, and Vocational Training for their efforts in organizing national clean-up and beautification initiatives.
"In this digital age, you must be equipped with the necessary skills to navigate the complex global ecosystem. The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence means we must adapt to the fast-changing world by capacitating ourselves, sector by sector, with the requisite digital proficiencies and capabilities," he said.
The President’s remarks come amid increased efforts by the Government to curb drug abuse, which has been affecting young people across the country. His strong stance signals a commitment to tackling the crisis head-on through collaborative efforts involving law enforcement, communities, and youth empowerment programs.
