President Emmerson Mnangagwa has underscored the importance of peace, unity, and international cooperation as Zimbabwe prepares to host the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit of Heads of State and Government.
The event, which honors the sacrifices of the nation’s liberation heroes, also served as a platform for the President to highlight Zimbabwe’s commitment to fostering friendly relations both regionally and globally.
In a speech at the Heroes Day Commemorations, President Mnangagwa noted that the upcoming SADC Summit would be a significant event for Zimbabwe, as the country prepares to assume the Chairmanship of the regional body.
“Today’s celebrations come a few days before our hosting of the SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government, where we will also be assuming the Chairmanship of our regional body,” he said.
President Mnangagwa also took the opportunity to commend Zimbabweans for maintaining peace across the nation, a key factor in the country’s positive international image.
“I once again take this opportunity to thank all Zimbabweans for maintaining a peaceful environment across the length and breadth of our Motherland.
“Our brand remains that of a progressive and loving people who are hospitable not only to their kith and kin but to all persons created in the image of the Lord Almighty,” he remarked.
He encouraged the nation to continue this tradition of hospitality, ensuring that visitors to Zimbabwe feel welcomed and at home.
“Let us all continue to make our visitors feel at home away from home, that we are one with them, and that they shall always be free to visit, whether on business or on private affairs. That is the Zimbabwe that our departed liberators whom we are gathered here to commemorate would have loved to live in: in harmony and always committed to the betterment of mankind,” the President added.
As the nation commemorated Heroes Day, President Mnangagwa urged all Zimbabweans to reflect on the hard-won independence and freedom they enjoy today, which was secured through the sacrifice of courageous men and women who fought against colonial rule.
“I, therefore, call upon every one of us to emulate their lives through playing our part by laying the foundations for a more prosperous future for both present and future generations,” he concluded.
Moreso, President Mnangagwa’s address at the Heroes Acre highlighted Zimbabwe’s dedication to peace, unity, and the continued development of strong, cooperative relationships within the region and beyond, as the nation honors its past and looks forward to a prosperous future.
