President Emmerson Mnangagwa has paid tribute to the late Brigadier General (Retired) Dr Michael Chaminuka whom he has described as a revered figure in Zimbabwe's liberation struggle and a dedicated servant in the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, the Harare Post can report.
Addressing mourners at the National Heroes Acre in Harare today, President Mnangagwa extolled the virtues of the late Brigadier General, recounting his undying commitment to the nation.
"Today we are here to honour a man who dedicated his life to the service of Zimbabwe, from the battlefields of our liberation struggle to the esteemed ranks of our defence forces," said President Mnangagwa.
He highlighted the national hero’s role as a military intelligence guru, noting, "His exemplary patriotism and unwavering consistency in service have rightfully earned him a place among our greatest patriots."
The President also used the occasion to express his condolences to both the Chaminuka and Mutanda families, acknowledging the recent passing of another decorated officer, Retired Brigadier General Lameck Mutanda.
"We are deeply saddened by the loss of such loyal and astute officers. Their contributions will never be forgotten, and their legacies will inspire future generations," he affirmed.
Reflecting on the broader significance of the liberation struggle, President Mnangagwa underscored the importance of remembering and honouring the past.
"A people who do not know their history are like trees without roots," he remarked, invoking a call to preserve the memory of those who fought for Zimbabwe's freedom.
This history, he insisted, is crucial as the nation continues to advance towards its Vision 2030 goals.
The burial of Brigadier General Chaminuka was not just a moment to mourn but also an opportunity to reinforce the values of hard work, discipline, and patriotism among the Zimbabwean people.
As the nation prepares to host the 44th SADC Summit, President Mnangagwa called for unity and collective responsibility to enhance the country's standing on the international stage and to ensure a successful summit.
"Let us all work diligently to present a Zimbabwe that is not only beautiful and clean but also peaceful and welcoming to our guests," the President urged.
With these words, the President not only honoured a hero but also set the tone for the nation's path forward, marking a day of remembrance with a renewed commitment to national unity and progress.
