The three-day National Disability Expo has commenced in Bindura, shining a spotlight on disability issues and showcasing efforts by the Government and its partners to enhance the welfare of people with disabilities.

The expo, running from 10 to 12 July, aims to empower individuals with disabilities and to bring their contributions and challenges at the forefront of national discourse.

In an exclusive interview, with Director of the Office of Special Advisor on National Disability Issues in the Office of the President and Cabinet, Macnon Chirinzepi, highlighted that the disability issues are being mainstreamed and are at the center of development planning.

“There are many things done by people with disabilities in Zimbabwe, so we will be showcasing what organizations are doing for people with disabilities. Government ministries and organizations will be showcasing what they do for people with disabilities in Zimbabwe. We do this as we drive towards Vision 2030. Gone are the days when people with disabilities were looked down upon,” said Chirinzepi.

Participant, Miriam Nyekete, expressed her gratitude, emphasizing that the event offers a vital platform for their voices to be heard and their needs addressed, fostering a sense of empowerment.

“I am happy that our President, Dr. Emmerson Mnangagwa, has our interests at heart, leading to this expo. I am living with disability and have been involved in the planning of this event,” said Nyekete.

Leonard Cheshire Disability Zimbabwe’s Orthopaedic Technologist, Jacob Mutimbwa, emphasized that exhibitors are leveraging this platform to raise awareness and disseminate crucial information about their services and products.

“The importance of connecting with people, who may lack access to vital resources, is to ensure that individuals with disabilities are informed about available support and opportunities. This engagement aims to bridge gaps in knowledge and accessibility, empowering attendees with the information they need to improve their quality of life.

“As an organization we are working together with the Jairos Jiri Association, and we are saying people with disabilities deserve to own homes and live easily, so we are dedicated to working with them.”

The expo has seen an overwhelming response, with 113 organizations participating. People with disabilities have played a leading role in planning and executing the event, reflecting their integral role in the process.

The National Disability Expo, which will be officially opened this Friday, is held annually, underscoring the Government’s commitment to addressing barriers faced by persons with disabilities.
