President Emmerson Mnangagwa celebrated the resilience and unity of Zimbabweans, underscoring their readiness to protect and defend the nation’s sovereignty.
Speaking yesterday at the unveiling of the Kamungoma Liberation War Shrine in Gutu, Masvingo, President Mnangagwa emphasised the continued commitment of Zimbabweans to safeguard their country.
"We are resilient people, ever prepared to defend and protect our country. This spirit must never die. Yesteryear we took up arms; today we are building our country in unity, brick by brick and stone upon stone, strengthened by the knowledge that Nyika inovakwa, inotongwa, inonamatigwa nevene vayo/ilizwe lakhiwa, libuswe, likhulekelwe ngabanikazi balo,” President Mnangagwa stated.
Highlighting the importance of unity and shared purpose, President Mnangagwa drew parallels between the unity that fuelled the liberation struggle and the collective effort required to achieve the nation's development goals.
The President stressed the importance of maintaining the revolutionary unity, focus and determination to modernise and industrialise Zimbabwe for future prosperity.
President Mnangagwa firmly rejected regionalism, tribalism, and all forms of divisions, attributing the nation's independence to the unity among the Zimbabwean people and calling for its continued protection.
In his speech, the President remembered the tragedy of May 14, 1978, when 104 innocent civilians and a guerrilla fighter were killed by the settler regime, underscoring the sacrifices made for Zimbabwe's sovereignty.
President Mnangagwa also praised the efforts of communities and individuals, including the Chimbwidos and Mujibhas, who played a critical role in the liberation struggle through reconnaissance and intelligence gathering.
The President directed the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, along with the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe and other key stakeholders, to expand the memorialization of the Kamungoma Liberation War Shrine.
The President emphasised that the same revolutionary unity, focus, and determination that were pivotal during the liberation struggle must persist in the ongoing endeavours to modernise and industrialise Zimbabwe.
Meanwhile, the President reiterated that no one will die of hunger, as the government will mobilise resources to provide food to those facing insecurity.
