Police crackdown on illegal firearms amid rising crime concerns

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a stern warning against the illegal acquisition and possession of firearms, citing a worrying increase in the proliferation of unlicensed weapons across the country.

In a statement released yesterday, ZRP Spokesperson,Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, highlighted that many firearms are being obtained illegally, contributing to a surge in violent crimes.

The ZRP emphasised that firearms are not inherited like other property. In the event of a firearm holder’s death, the weapon must be surrendered to the nearest police station, pending regularisation by an eligible person.

The police also expressed concern over firearm holders failing to renew their licences, update their residential or business addresses, or comply with the Firearms Act Chapter 10.09. Such deviations, the statement noted, are criminal offences.

Authorities urged the public to purchase firearms only through legal channels and report suspicious activities related to firearms.

The ZRP’s statement underscored the dangers of illegal firearm dealings, linking them to an uptick in violent crimes, including armed robberies and murders.

The police called for due diligence when acquiring firearms, stressing that unauthorised possession or trade could lead to severe legal consequences.

Security analyst Tendai Ndlovu, commended the ZRP’s stance.

“The proliferation of illegal firearms is a national security threat. Strengthening enforcement and public awareness is critical to curbing this menace.”

However, Linda Chirenje, a human rights advocate, raised concerns about potential overreach.

“While regulation is necessary, authorities must ensure that lawful firearm owners are not unfairly targeted. Transparency in the licensing process is key.”

The ZRP’s warning comes amid growing public anxiety over soaring crime rates, with many calling for stricter measures to disarm criminal networks.
