President Emmerson Mnangagwa has reaffirmed his Government's unwavering commitment to honouring the sacrifices of the country's forefathers, a move that underscores his deep respect and remembrance for its liberation heroes.

Speaking during the official commissioning of the Pupu Battlefield Memorial Site in Lupane, Matabeleland North Province, yesterday, the President highlighted the enduring legacy of those who fought for Zimbabwe's independence and freedom.

“The journey of our forefathers will never be forgotten. This has seen my Government recognising heroes and heroines of the first Chimurenga/Umvukela, for example, through the mounting of the Mbuya Nehanda Statue in Harare,” President Mnangagwa stated.

The President emphasised the importance of accurately preserving and narrating Zimbabwe's liberation story, stressing that “we all have a duty to safeguard our national identity as the people of Zimbabwe by telling the correct story of our country, ourselves.”

President Mnangagwa underscored the critical role of strategic national institutions and monuments, like the Pupu Battlefield Memorial Site, in honouring the valorous deeds of Zimbabwe's liberation warriors.

The President pointed out the necessity of these memorials in teaching future generations about the sacrifices made for the country's independence, urging the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage to ensure the historical narrative is devoid of colonial biases and misrepresentations.

Highlighting the significance of the newly unveiled monument, President Mnangagwa recounted the historic battle at Pupu, where Ndebele warriors showcased unparalleled bravery against colonial forces.

“It was here where the pioneering gallant heroes of our beloved motherland, Zimbabwe, waged one of the most historic early battles against white settler invasion and colonialism,” he remarked, honouring the specialist regiment of King Lobengula's army.

The President also touched upon the dark chapters of Zimbabwe's past, including the desecration of sacred sites and the need to confront and rectify these historical injustices.

 He reiterated the nation's resolve to protect its sovereignty, echoing the spirit of resistance demonstrated by the forefathers against colonial subjugation.

President Mnangagwa called upon citizens to stand together in pursuit of national development agendas and to reject divisive forces.

In a related development, President Mnangagwa also officially commissioned the Pupu Clinic, situated about 5 kilometres from the memorial site.

The commissioned clinic is equipped with a borehole and nurses' houses, representing the Government's commitment to inclusive development and improving the healthcare infrastructure in the region.

Meanwhile, the commissioning of the Pupu Battlefield Memorial Site and the opening of the Pupu Clinic are testament to the country's dedication to honouring its history, while building a future that all Zimbabweans can be proud of.
