MDC Alliance principal, Tendai Biti landed himself in hot soup when he declared his ally, Nelson Chamisa as the winner of the 30 July elections as he has been facing his woes alone since then.
“My mom and my brothers, Harrison Nkomo and Kucaca Phulu, after our court appearance this morning. In difficult times our mothers and indeed women go through unprecedented and unmitigated suffering. No words can capture our gratitude and indebtedness to our mothers,” tweeted Biti soon after leaving the court yesterday.
However, people are not sympathising with him as his world is falling on him with none of his cronies in the MDC Alliance in the mould of Chamisa, Douglas Mwonzora and Charlton Hwende, among others decided to show up at the court.
Bhekilizwe Zwelinjani @BhekilizweZ tweeted that, “Emotional blackmail will not work. So how do you feel dragging an old woman into unnecessary suffering? Kwanai imi mudhara”. While, Hon Takunda Taka @TakundaTaka added his voice saying, “Ana mhomz ndo vanokufambirai, vachibatiswa makwenzi, bute neminamato, pamusaka pemusikanzwa yenyu boys”.
Biti is being charged with contravening Section 66A of the Electoral Act which reads, “(1) No person other than an electoral officer, acting in accordance with this Act, may officially declare and announce the results of an election. (2) No office-bearer or member of a political party shall purport to declare and announce the results of any election before it has been declared officially by an electoral officer.”
Biti prematurely announced that Chamisa had won the Presidential race before the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission had made a proclamation of the winner. His utterances resulted in political violence in Harare Central Business District (CBD) which left six people dead. Biti was arrested after fleeing to Zambia.
