President Emmerson Mnangagwa has ordered safety checks of all the country’s grain silos following yesterday’s explosion at the Lions Den Grain Marketing Board (GMB) depot which resulted in the death of four people and injury to several others.
In his condolence message to the bereaved families, President Mnangagwa said that the safety checks and necessary remedial measures which he had ordered were meant to avert any such mishaps in the future.
The President revealed that while investigations were still underway, initial indications were pointing to a possible electrical fault exacerbated by combustible gases in the tunnels may have caused the fatal explosion.
“I have already instructed relevant Government arms to ensure that appropriate State assistance extended to all those caught up in the explosion,” said the President.
President Mnangagwa commended the deceased’s dedication to duty saying they died in line of duty as they sought to secure the country’s Strategic Grain Reserves stored at many sites which include Lions Den.
The four people died when an explosion went off at the grain depot as the GMB workforce was carrying out maintenance work on the silo.
