CCC-led council criticized as Harare's drainage system fails residents

In the wake of incessant heavy rains currently being experienced in the capital city, Harare residents are voicing their frustration over the poor state of the drainage system.

Complaints have surged as water stagnation becomes a widespread issue, creating hazardous conditions in several neighbourhoods

A Harare resident and business owner, Mr. Chitungwiza, expressed his concerns, stating, "The drainage system is a disaster. Water doesn't move, and our streets are turning into mini lakes. It's not just inconvenient; it's a health risk for us and our businesses”

Another resident, only identified as Mrs. Moyo echoed Chitungwiza’s sentiments, saying, "We tried contacting the Harare City Council, but they demanded a hefty amount to fix the sewage issues. It's unacceptable. We pay rates for these services, and yet, we are left to deal with flooded streets and compromised sanitation."

The sentiment was shared by several others, with Moyo further emphasizing, "The CCC-led Harare Council has failed us. The drainage problems persist, and our appeals seem to fall on deaf ears. We need urgent solutions."

Business owner Lawrence Gumbo raised safety concerns about the stagnant water due to lack of drainages.

"The waterlogged streets pose risks to both pedestrians and drivers. It's a breeding ground for diseases, and our businesses are suffering due to the inaccessible roads,” Gumbo said.

Meanwhile, in a show of solidarity, a group of concerned residents in Highfield gathered to discuss the deteriorating situation.  Nomore Dube, a participant in the meeting declared, "We are now calling on the Government to intervene since the CCC-led council has failed us. The drainage system needs a comprehensive overhaul to prevent further damage.

“We deserve better. The Government needs to step in and ensure our City's infrastructure is able to handle these weather challenges. Our lives are at risk,” said Dube.

With the drainage system proving inadequate to handle the heavy rains, Harare residents are left struggling with consequences. The pressure mounts on local authorities to address these pressing issues and restore functionality to the city's essential infrastructure.
