Government has dispelled fears of scarcity and soaring prices of basic commodities during the festive season.

In a recent press statement following a meeting with Business Member Organisations (BMOs), the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Dr. Sithembiso Nyoni, affirmed the country’s preparedness in terms of commodity availability and price stability.

Minister Nyoni emphasised, "Let me assure the nation that industry has enough stocks of basic commodities and that businesses will immediately work on modalities to ensure that there will not be any sharp price increases."

This assurance comes as a relief to many, particularly at a time when concerns about inflation and supply issues are prevalent.

Further bolstering this commitment, the Government and the business community have reached a consensus on maintaining fair trade practices.

Minister Nyoni highlighted, "We also agreed that the business community should trade fairly and desist from profiteering and from creating artificial shortages."

According to the Minister, this agreement was pivotal in ensuring that the market remains stable and that consumers are not subject to unnecessary financial strain, especially during a period of festive celebrations.

Minister Nyoni expressed gratitude towards the cooperation from business players, stating, "We are grateful to the business players that have joined hands with the ministry to ensure that we do not allow any price increases, particularly at this point in time when families will be celebrating Christmas and the New Year, indeed a time when basic commodities should not be found wanting on the market."

The Minister added that, as Government, they have observed a worrying trend in the previous week, with notable price hikes in essential items.

"As a Ministry, we have observed an emerging trend of increases in the prices of basic commodities during this week, wherein laundry soap has gone up 16%, cooking oil by 13%, bread by 12%, and mealie-meal by 9%. It was pleasing to note that the price of sugar has remained constant," the Minister reported.

In response to these observations, she said that her Ministry was committed to proactively addressing any negative market trends.

"As the Ministry responsible for commerce and industry, we have the onus to get to the bottom of this and nip any negative developments in the bud," Minister Nyoni affirmed.

The Government’s proactive stance and collaboration with the business sector are crucial steps towards ensuring a joyful and stress-free festive season for the citizens of Zimbabwe.

With these measures in place, families across the country can look forward to celebrating the festive season without worrying about basic commodity shortages or exorbitant prices.
