The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) candidate nomination process has been dismissed as an academic exercise as Nelson Chamisa was disregarding that process choosing to handpick his preferred candidates to represent that party in this year’s elections.
A CCC insider, who spoke to this publication on condition of anonymity, said that Chamisa intended to disregard results of that party’s nomination process in Chiundura constituency to pave way for his ally, Lloyd Nyamayedenga.
“We all thought that the party’s candidates for this year’s elections would be selected through the candidate selection process held last month but we were wrong. As it stands, Chamisa has lined up a number of his preferred candidates to contest on behalf of the party in some constituencies. For instance, in Chiundura constituency, Chamisa has imposed Lloyd Nyamayedenga to represent the party despite him not being the people favourite. In Chiundura, people want Gift Nyamurondiwa to represent CCC not this Nyamayedenga. It is now clear that the nomination process was not a genuine exercise but an academic one,” said the source.
The source added that Chamisa had a vendetta against Nyamurondiwa because he contested as an independent candidate in 2018 in protest against Chamisa’s unconstitutional ascendancy to the MDC Alliance presidency.
The same source said that it was not only in Chiundura that Chamisa was interfering with the nomination process but in other constituencies as well.
“It’s not only in Chiundura that Chamisa is interfering with the candidate nomination process but in other constituencies too. He wants CCC to be represented by people whose loyalty to him was not questionable. He only wants to align himself with people who would not question some of his decisions,” said the source.
According to the source, CCC interim organising secretary, Amos Chibaya, confided in one of his lieutenants that CCC candidate nomination process was just an academic exercise as the final list of candidates would be compiled by Chamisa.
Meanwhile, some CCC members were reportedly growing impatient with the delay in the announcement of candidates’ names that would represent that party in this year’s elections.
