Government has extended the national mobile registration exercise to allow citizens acquire national documents needed for voter registration.
In a statement yesterday, the Civil Registry Department announced that the exercise would be run until 31 July 2023. The extension is meant to provide citizens with an opportunity to obtain national identity cards so that they could register as voters in the upcoming harmonized elections.
The department further announced that the mop up mobile registration exercise would target people who have attained 18 years, those intending to register as voters and those with lost national registry documents.
"For further information regarding the Mop-up National Mobile Registration Exercise, all members of the public are advised to refer to the information on registration centres and itineraries provided in the schedule (published in the media)," the department said.
Speaking to this publication, Gwanda ward 12 resident, Enoch Makati praised the move by the Government to extend the mobile registration exercise and said that it would allow more people to easily get vital registration documents.
"In the previous exercise, many youths failed to acquire the national documents. We applaud this move by the Government as it would allow many people to get the national registration documents so that they would be able to vote in this year’s elections,” said Makati.
Meanwhile, a number of teams have been deployed in all provinces to carry out the exercise whereby the mobile teams will work from 7am to 5pm during working hours.
